Vitamin B6 deficiency common in elderly Norwegians living in nursing homes
The study’s findings support the protective effect of vitamin supplementation on maintaining higher plasma PLP concentrations in this elderly population. This observation would be consistent with the notion that older elderly people living in nursing home should be provided with additional dietary vitamin B6 to decrease their risk of developing vitamin B6 deficiency. Choline
Choline is a member of the water-soluble B complex vitamin group. Classifying choline as a vitamin is questionable since humans synthesize it. However, because the rate of synthesis is normally insufficient to meet human metabolic needs, choline has been included as an essential vitamin nutrient. KEEP READING >>
Vitamin D2 or vitamin D3: Which is best?
Given the apparent important need to rely on vitamin D-fortified foods or vitamin D supplements to maintain optimal vitamin D status, the question of which form of vitamin D to use has attracted the attention of nutritional researchers. There are two options available for vitamin D fortification: a fungal-derived compound called ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) or an animal-derived compound called cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). Vitamin B-6 status linked to reduced all-cause mortality in elderly Taiwanese
Recently, the association of B-vitamin intake and status and all-cause mortality has been investigated in the Taiwanese Elderly Nutrition and Health Survey Study among 1,747 elderly participants over a 10-year follow-up period. Participants in the highest tertile (one-third) of vitamin B-1 intake had a 27% lower risk of all-cause mortality compared to those in the lowest tertile of vitamin B-1 intake. KEEP READING >>

Coenzyme Q10 supplementation improves vascular function
The meta-analysis found that in all of the studies but one, Coenzyme Q10 treatment had a significant positive effect. Larger, long-term, randomized trials of Coenzyme Q10 will be necessary to ultimately prove the efficacy of this treatment in cardiovascular disease. However, current findings from clinical trials appear promising. KEEP READING >>

Prenatal multiple micronutrient supplementation has positive effects on child postnatal growth
Low birth weight is an important determinant of child morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Therefore, much research has focused on understanding the pathogenesis of low birth weight and the development of various interventions to reduce the incidence of low birth weight. Among the nutritional approaches to this issue, iron and folate supplementation of pregnant mothers has gained widespread acceptance. Moreover, recent studies in various geographical locations have indicated that provision of additional micronutrients to expectant mothers has a positive effect on birth weight and reduces the incidence of low birth weight. Vitamin K was discovered in Copenhagen in 1935
In 1935, a scientist in Copenhagen observed that newly hatched chickens receiving a diet containing all of the known essential nutrients were developing a hemorrhagic disease. The problem was believed to be related to a decrease in prothrombin, a substance necessary for normal clotting of blood. The Danish scientist named this newly discovered antihemorrhagic factor vitamin K or “Koagulationsvitamin.” KEEP READING >>
What is spray drying?
Spray drying is the process of converting a mixture in its liquid form to a powder. This is done by removing the moisture component from the liquid solution. The solution, sometimes called an emulsion, is sprayed through a nozzle into a chamber that simultaneously has hot air being blown into it. As droplets of the solution are released through the nozzle and come in contact with the hot air, the moisture content of each droplet is removed, thus turning it from liquid to powder form.
